RILEY’S ROAD CG

Location Names

To add a bit of flavour to the AARs we have designated the following location names. This is done to not only to avoid making the AARs unnecessarily difficult to read, but also to allow the game to take on a life of its own. Each named area will incorporate a picture of the area, as the terrain is transformed by the battle I hope to transform the pictures too!

Named Zones on Base Map

B19 Area – EBBEN

60% German Controlled as of 19 Feb PM

CG Start

After 19PM Date

19 Feb – AM
The battle never reached this area though a Canadian Barrage did and in keeping with the unusual nature of the game this is also the only place that the Barrages did any damage.

19 Feb – PM
With a line of German foxholes linking them to the map edge and 3 major MG positions this was always going to be a tough nut for the Canadians to crack, when they lost 2x AFV and a Radio before the attack even began they choose to just claim the E22 and F16 buildings and then leave it at that.

H10 Area – GOCH CROSSROADS

Canadian Controlled as of 19 Feb PM

19 Feb – AM
The Battle did not reach this area. This promises to be the location of frantic fighting in the next game though.

19 Feb – PM
With the exception of a HIP German OBA observer in the E14 house this area was the scene of no major action apart from an Wasp being destroyed through an OBA attack. The Canadians claimed all the locations here without any opposition from the Germans

N16 Area – THE UPPER HOUSES

Canadian Controlled as of 19 Feb PM

19 Feb – AM
This marks the extent of the Canadian Advances in the central part of the map with both the U17 and V18 buildings falling late in the game.

19 Feb – PM
The site of a German OBA attack and a foxhole holding the major Canadian MG position for firing on the Milk Factory this area was actually a bit of a blood-letting ground for the Allied forces as lucky OBA and 88LL attacks caused the loss of men and AFVs. The N16 building was claimed without loss though putting this part of the battleground firmly in Canadian control by the end of the first Turn.

N24 Area – THE SOUTHERN FARMHOUSES

Canadian Controlled as of 19 Feb PM

19 Feb – AM
The Canadians sent a Carrier around to this area from the East and were able to claim the buildings to the East of the M24-M28 road.

19 Feb – PM
A minor German counter-attack should have jumped on, killed some Canadian units in CC and then jumped right off again. instead a terrible set of CC results caused unnecessary losses to the Germans which was compounded when they reinforced their original failure. A Wasp here (the sole one remaining by the end of the Game) was the main culprit and he managed to survive a LMG TK CH attack which seemed to sum up the flow of the game for the Germans perfectly.

Q10 Area – THE MILK FACTORY

66% Controlled as of 19 Feb

At CG Start

After 19PM Date

19 Feb – AM
Firmly in German hands at the end of the battle. This area promises to be a caldron in the next day’s play. Ringed with mines and protected by numerous troops and an 88LL AT gun (the only one to not malfunction) this was too tough a nut for the Allies to try and crack.

19 Feb – PM
Thanks to some effective and lethal 120mm German OBA the Canadian attack on the Milk Factory suffered time and manpower losses early on. This was followed by a 88LL ROF run which massacred the main MG support for their attack. However that was the end of the luck for the Germans and nothing went right from that point until the end of game dr (which saved this position for totally falling). The Canadians paid a price for taking the 2 buildings here, but not as much as they perhaps should have.

AA24 Area – THE SOUTHERN CROSSROADS

Canadian Controlled as of 19 Feb AM

19 Feb – AM
Taking this area was easy for the Canadians and will be messy for the Germans to take back later in the battle. The Allies used their Carriers to grab this area and the surrounding ones too.

19 Feb – PM
Although this area was not involved in the battle the Canadians did place a pair of 57L AT Guns around here in anticipation of a counter-attack.

EE10 Area – THE LOWER HOUSE

Canadian Controlled as of 19 Feb AM

19 Feb – AM
With a bit of good luck the Germans were able to wipe out some of the attacking Canadians from this position. With a bit of bad luck they then fell cheaply, though their loss did manage to hold up a number of units that could have been used elsewhere.

19 Feb – PM
This area was not involved in the battle at all.

JJ11 Area – THE KALKAR CROSSROADS

Canadian Controlled as of 19 Feb PM

19 Feb – AM
This was a very profitable part of the battleground for the Germans… until they lost yet ANOTHER 88LL to 6,6. The Canadians did not send as many men down this extreme flank as the Germans had hoped, but what they did send through here was quickly dealt with by the 88LL. In the end the Canadians just bypassed the position leaving the SS7 Fortified Building under German Control.

19 Feb – PM
Although they were in no rush the Canadians eventually secured then SS7 building by killing the German 228 in CC, but they lost a HS in doing so.

OO23 Area – THE SCHWANENHOF

Canadian Controlled as of 19 Feb AM

19 Feb – AM
The Canadians were able to gobble this area up with ease once they entered the mid-to-back lines. The Defender had nothing back here and all it took were a few Carriers and some HS.

19 Feb – AM
The battle did not reach this area at all.
